Each character in this game has a special ability. They follow you around and by pressing R you can use their special ability. The game starts by having you play as either Sonic or Tails. Sega had been trying to force teams of Sonic characters on us since Chaotix! I feel that with Sonic Advance 3 they got it right. Sega really did a great job here and the game looks so good that you know there is no way that this game could have existed on the 16-bit hardware of the Mega Drive! This feels like a next-generation 2D Sonic game before that was a thing. It is not just the levels, but the characters as well which look fantastic. There is just so much color and so many little details that it is sometimes a shame you are moving so fast as it is easy to miss the little details. I really want another modern 2D game like Advance/Rush, Mania is great and I hope we get a sequel but damn do I miss the stylish modern Sonic games like this. The presentation of Sonic Advance 3 is amazing! I think this is the best looking of the trilogy. Super memorable zones and music too, whereas I have a hard time remembering any zones or tracks from Advance 1 or 2.Īll three games have pretty fantastic sprite work though, GBA had some really fantastic use of pixels all around and these games are no exception. Haven't played the game in over a decade, so it probably hasn't aged very well, but out of personal bias and nostalgia I think I like it the most overall conceptually speaking. Felt like there was a lot of love put into the game too, and it tying into another GBA Sonic game's plot was very neat. The team up abilities felt like a true evolution of having Tails as an AI buddy in Sonic 2/3/&K and I'm legitimately sad they never followed up on it. Cream was cool though, cute character that added something new.Īdvance 3 was my favorite as a kid and I absolutely love how it has a hub world and all-in-one campaign instead of just having you play the game over and over again as each character. I appreciate the focus on speed, but I wanna go fast and have some actual level design challenging me. Whenever someone says "hold right to win" in relation to a Sonic game, they're usually overreacting and saying it in bad faith, but Advance 2 legitimately feels like "hold right to win." I was getting through levels just by running and occasionally jumping and that was it, super boring. Never 100% beat Advance 2 because I got bored. Loved how different Amy played, she felt extra challenging and shook up the game substantially. I beat the game as every character when I was a kid and I had a good time. My only issues with it are that it's a bit zoomed in and physics are a bit weird. Advance 1 is actually a nice and straightforward platformer that's a nice modernization of what the classics did.
